Choose one format
Search for a paper shopping bag, folding carton, corrugated mailer or another specific format. Include what it must hold and any essential material or size.
Check customization fit
Review candidate listings for the format and construction you need. Treat printing methods, colour matching and custom-order minimums as questions until confirmed.
Prepare a sample request
Select products and prepare an inquiry covering the exact order plus samples, setup charges and timing. Agree how the sample will be checked before committing to production.
A clearer starting point
Start with a packaging request a supplier can interpret
State the order of dimensions and whether they are internal or external. Mention whether the packaging touches food or has another special use, because appearance alone cannot establish suitability.
I need 2,000 corrugated mailer boxes for clothing, internal size 30 × 22 × 8 cm (length × width × height), kraft outside, one-colour black logo. Please suggest a suitable board grade and quote samples separately.

Buyer’s checklist
Six specifications that make packaging quotes comparable
Send the same specification revision to every candidate. Keep optional finishes and alternative materials on separate lines so a lower price does not hide a different product.
Size and construction
Name the format; label length, width, depth or height; state internal or external dimensions.
Ask or check: Please confirm the finished dimensions, agreed tolerances, closure or handle construction, and flat-packed size.
Material and performance
Describe the paper or board, intended contents and expected load. Paper weight alone does not define strength.
Ask or check: Which material or board grade do you propose, and how will suitability for the contents and transport be checked?
Artwork and printing
Specify printed sides, number of colours, coverage, finish and artwork revision.
Ask or check: Which printing process is included? What artwork format, dieline approval and colour reference do you require?
Quantity by variant
Separate the total from the quantities for each size, design or colour.
Ask or check: Does the minimum apply per size or artwork? Please quote the exact split and any agreed overrun or underrun allowance.
Samples and setup
Distinguish a stock sample, a structural mock-up and a sample using your actual print and material.
Ask or check: Which sample is included, what will differ from production, and what are the sample, plate or tooling charges?
Packing and delivery
A unit quote does not show shipment volume or all delivery costs.
Ask or check: How many pieces fit in a carton? Please provide carton dimensions, gross weight, lead-time basis and delivery terms.
Approve a sample against a written checklist
Test the actual product fit, closure, handles where relevant, print placement and ordinary handling. Record the approved material, artwork version and any tolerances. A digital proof can help check layout but cannot establish physical fit or strength.
Ask for evidence behind material claims
Claims such as recycled content, certified paper or food-contact suitability need evidence applicable to the supplied material and intended market. Ask what is covered and by whom. Do not infer a certification from a logo in a listing image.

Common questions
What is the minimum order for custom packaging?
There is no single minimum that applies to every supplier and design. Format, material, printing, tooling and the number of variants affect it. Ask whether the quoted minimum is per size, per artwork or for the combined order.
Should I provide the product size or the packaging size?
Provide both when possible, clearly labelled. State whether packaging dimensions are internal or external, and ask the supplier to allow for fit, inserts and closure. Verify the proposed size with a physical sample.
Is a printed sample necessary?
The right sample depends on the risk you need to check. A structural mock-up can help with fit; an actual printed sample helps check material, print and finish. Confirm what a sample represents and what could differ in production.
